About Bandhavgarh

* History: The park gets its name from the grand Bandhavgarh Fort perched on the highest hillock of the region. Mentioned in the great epics Ramayana and Shiva Purana, the region was home to the magnificent white tigers which unfortunately eloped due to hunting by the mid-20th century. Declared a national park in 1968, Bandhavgarh adopted Project Tiger in 1993.

* Location: Bandhavgarh forms a part of the thick Central India forests in the state of Madhya Pradesh, which is also home to the national parks of Pench, Kanha and Panna. Spread over District Umaria, the park is about 880 km. from the national capital Delhi, about 516 km. from the state capital Bhopal and about 20 km. from the district headquarters Umaria.

* Area: Bandhavgarh National Park spans over 449 sq. km. With about 467 sq. km of buffer area and 246 sq. km of Panpatha Wildlife Sanctuary, the park constitutes 1,162 sq. km. of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve.

* Flora: Set amidst eye-pleasing landscapes of sandstone mountains, sprawling valleys and meandering streams are the forests of sal and bamboo. Moist deciduous, moist mixed deciduous and southern dry mixed deciduous trees dominate the canvas along with many flowering plants.

* By Road: The park is accessible from the closest major city of Jabalpur via NH 7 or via SH 11 and 22. NH 7, along with NH 22, connects it to the state capital Bhopal. * By Rail: The railway station at Umaria is about 33 km. from the main entry gate at Tala and is well-connected to the top cities of North, West, East and Central India.

* By Air: Jabalpur Airport is about 160 km. from Tala with regular flights from cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal and Gwalior. Visitors can also board chartered planes to reach the Umaria Airstrip located close to the park.
